I completed my studies in Voorhees College at Vellore.N.A, then I got a job in Postal department as H.G.Clerk. I started my music lessons at the age of nine. Mr. Edwards taught me the rudiments of music in the beginning. His daughter Miss. Christina Edwards was also studying with me, and she was a year younger than me. My Grandpa took interest in encouraging me to study music, he spent what all had to get me one Piano/accordian from Dr.Mendis (Doctor in C.M.C.Hospital,VLR) Afterwards I continued to study myself through many music books. Then I learnt Piano-accordion with the help of some tutorial books.
We were living in Sainathapuram, at Vellore.N.A. There was one Theological Seminary in Mission compound (at Sainathapuram) Rev.S.Tychicus.B.D. was the Principal. His son Mr.Bakthan Tychicus was my close friend, he started learning violin. When I continued my studies in Voorhees College, Vellore.NA.Dist, Mr.Bakthan Tychicus was my college mate. And from him I used to ask all my doubts in music, and he was my good guide. We started a music Orchestra in our college, and we both participated in so many cultural programmes.
Dr.Christy Anand Chellappa (Piano accordionist), and Mr.Jeyakaran Joseph were started an Orchestra at Vellore, and they named it as New Bright Orchestra. In the beginning I joined there as a singer. On Christmas days we will be busy in carol rounds. In our church (Bethel church, in Sainathapuram) every year I used to perform some special Christmas songs with the help of my friends, most of the songs are my own compositions. Then I joined with New-Bright Orchestra as second Accordionist. As an accordionist I learnt so many things from my Guru Dr.Anand Chellappa who was the conductor, main accordionist, and leader of the orchestra. He used to encourage me whenever I perform music. But when Dr.Anand Chellappa went aboard, I felt like an orphan in the Orchestra, nobody was there in the orchestra to encourage me.And I found that so many politics started blooming in our New bright Orchestra. So I dint want to continue as a musician over there.
After I left new bright Orchestra I began practicing regularly in my house. One day my college mate Mr.Jones (He was working in Record section in C.M.C Hospital) and Mr.Rajan (Avery good artist and Harmonist,at Vellore.) came to my house. They are planning to start a music group, and they requested me to join. And I agreed for that. From then onwards we started training our friends to build a good orchestra. Night and day we struggled to improvise the standard of our orchestra, we succeeded. We named our music group as, Star Light Orchestra. We earned a good name and fame. Each and every year we used to conduct Anniversaries with a grand scale. We called almost all cine musicians, music directors including Mr.Ilayaraja, and singers to participate in our performances we conduct. Our Star Light Orchestra became the number one orchestra at Vellore.N.A.Dist.
Ilaiyaraja

" Isai Maa Mannan Ilayaraja" We have invited Mr.Ilayaraja as a chief guest to our Star Light Orchestra at Vellore..N.A.Dist.

Mr.Ilayaraja as a chief guest to Starlight Orchestra, singing a song.

Mr.Jones (Secretary of Star light Orchestra)
Mr.D.Jacob Jesupatham (Piano-Accordionist,and the Director of Star Light Orchestra.)

I met Mr. Charles (Pianist) at Vellore. I saw him writing music scores for church songs (Keerthanas). He taught some important factors in music harmony. I wished to write the musical scores in western notation like him for my own compositions for Christmas songs. He only told me to go to Mr.Dhanraj master in Madras to learn more about western music.. And I went to Madras to see the master. My friend Mr.Sakthivictor who was a leading violinist in Mr.M.S.Viswanathan and Ramamoorthy music group, who were the famous Tamil film music directors in Madras. Mr.Sakthi Victor was living in Murudhus Lodge near mylapore tank. He took me to Mr.Dhanraj master; who was teaching music in Sai Lodge, which was a neighbour lodge to Murudhuss lodge in Mylapore.
Star Light Orchestra giving send-off to me.
I was conducting the Star Light Orchestra at Vellore.N.A.Dist from 1965. Then I had a transfer to Tirupathur.N.A.Dist. There I met a friend Mr. Mustafa, he was very eager to learn music, he learnt Bongos. Where ever I go for programs, he accompanied me. In Tirupathur I had a chance of playing in a Circus, which was very popular, and it was known as The Kamala Three Ring Circus. Every evening after returning from my job in Post office I used to go to the circus to play piano-accordion. Those days Piano-accordion was a rare instrument. So it fascinated the people coming to circus. I had so many fans including the workers in circus. Every month I allotted two or three days to pay a visit to madras to develop my music knowledge with Mr. Dhanrai master. After some years I had a transfer to Madras itself, through Mr.D.J.Perianayagam, Director General of Post offices who was impressed by my playing, gave me a transfer saying that there are so much scope in Madras to study music properly. This helped me a lot, and I have settled at Madras itself after my marriage.

When I came to Madras I saw only three or four music groups. Mr.Kamesh and Mr.Rajamani were running one big music group. .I joined in Kamesh-Rajamanis group. Mr.Narayanan who was a violinist became a good friend of mine; he was very good in western music theory. Then we both played for Mr.Ganapathy, who was an employee in RBI. Then I was playing with Mr.Ramji (Drummer) in a hotel, known as the Bamboo hut hotel. Mr.Anand, Mr.Shivraj, met me in Music academy one day, and called me to play for them. .
Before that harmonium was the key instrument in music parties, then piano-accordion took its prominence, then electric-organ, after that only the Key-board came. Those days there was only black and white T.V. I think that Shivraj Anand group was the first music group appeared in the T.V. And I came to know that Mr.R.K.Sekar is the father of Mr.Dhillip (after wards he is known as A.R.Rahman (Music director). I played for so many music directors. Mr.Doss Daniel assistant music director to Shankar Ganesh, was my close friend, through him only I could able to enter into the cine field. Then Mr.Gunasingh, and Mr.Sekar from Coimbatore encouraged me well. I could able to play piano-accordion for so many film rerecordings. Mrs.Kamaladevi who was an employee in Port trust requested me to play for her orchestra. After some years Mr.Malesia vasudevan called me to play for him permanently. Mr.Gangai Amaran was a guitarist in his group. Then Mr.Gangai Amaran started his own group, in which I was asked to play. Because Gangai Amaran and Malesia vasu were good friends we were adjusting the clash dates. Then it was so happened that I had to be with Gangi Amaran only. Mr.Ilayaraja used to come and participate often in our Gangai Amarans group.

Every week we used to have a rehearsal. All the musicians will gather to- gather in a place which was selected to have rehearsal, the full day we will be spending over there, practicing the new songs for the programs. I used to take the notations from the cassettes and distribute to the musicians to make them play. We had been to several countries, to perform music. I was so blessed to meet Mr.Fohbs(Once a leading violinist in Mr.M.S.Viswanathans music group, (and he is the founder of the Madras Chamber Orchestra, in Madras.) in Singapore symphony Orchestra. I heard people said
that the stage we went to perform music, was the stage regularly used for The Singapore Symphony Orchestra. Mr.Fohbs introduced some of the musicians to me. I was really proud to see that my friend Mr.Fohbs was playing in such a big Orchestra.

The photo below shows the Gangai Amarans group. In the beginning I was alone playing combo-organ.
The musicians in Mr.Gangai Amaran's Party are:
Mr.D.Jacob Jesupatham ( Organ)
Mr.Veeraraghavan(Mandolin),
Mr.Subramanian(Solo violinist)
Mr.Raju(Clarinet and flute and then soprano sax)
Mr.Ravi(Guitarist),
Mr.Babu(Trumpet),
Mr.Dominic(Trombone),
Mr.Sashidaran(Bass guitar)
Mr.Babu(Drummer),
Mr.Sundar (Percutionist),
Mr.Raja(Tabela),
Mr.Jeewadurai (Tabela-2),
Mr.Nagarathinam(Effects),
Mr.Prabhu(Dolak),
Then nearly after five years, Mr.Murali (brother of Mr.Deva-music director) came and join as a second Key-board player to help me. I was with Gangai Amaran for nearly nine years. Then my health condition did not allow me to continue in Gangai Amarns music group.

We were as one family in Gangai Amarans group. After I left I could not able to find a good music group, to join and play. The electronic field developed well, and the musicians became so lazy nowadays. They dont want to play manually in Programs, instead they put on, the sequenced track and acting as if they are playing. This kind of programming is not at all advisable.

My ambition was to begin an Institute in North Chennai for music study, and to create skilled students in Keyboard, to play songs and their arrangements with both hands, in my own style. My dream came true in 1998, and with the help of one among my disciples Mr. G. Lalith kumar, I could successfully establish, Sri Music Tuition Centre in North Chennai.1. I have also written four books, in which some preliminary simple exercises are given, to improvise students fingerings by both left and right hands. Before you start playing the, Memorable Melodies you are advised to practice these exercises for fingerings (Only 52 exercises) given in these four books. I have also written some books for Guitar. Some thousands of students could very easily complete these fingering exercises and were trained up successfully well in this institute.

I worked as music director also for a film,"Ikkaraiyilirunthu" which was taken in Tamil. For this film I was introduced as Arunraj. The famous singer Chitra sang one song,"Imaigal kannai Thazhuvum podhu thadukkalaguma."

The Orchestra was named as, Shivraj Anand Orchestra. We earned a very good name, and we became very famous. Mr.R.K.Sekar who was an assistant music director helped us to use his combo-organ (Electronic organ,"Farfesa" an Italian organ.) in our programs. I think that was the first organ used in music performances (kutcheries)

A comment by:
Mr.S.S.Jumbu from Indian Keyboards Forum about the book.
There is a new book called 'memorable melodies' by Mr. Jacob Jesupatham.
He has written Raja , MSV and a couple of Hindi songs FOR PIANO (& keyboard).. Never seen a film score written for Piano before, only keyboard. If you can play this, you can play anything...I heard he is a brilliant teacher who has produced many teachers.. He learnt with Raja from Dhanraj master.
Its not available everywhere. I bought it at Karnatic Music book centre, Royapettah, Chennai (ph 2811 1716). Only limited copies available. Or you can contact him directly at 2521 1364
Apparently he has many more songs which he has not published. He is waiting to see the response on this. So please go buy this quickly (to encourage him also to publish the rest also).

"Memorable Melodies"
It contains western notation for some Tamil and Hindi songs.
Also I have written four books for the students, to improve their proper fingerings in
